N. B.-In words beginning with ர, ரா, ரி, ரீ, ரெ, ரே mostly இis prefixed as in இராமன்; sometimes அ may precede ர as in அரங்கம். In words beginning with ரு, ரூ, ரொ, ரோ, the prefix is உ; exceptionally இ occurs in இருணம், இருது. For words not given here see under இ & உ.
A syllabic letter compounded of ய் and அ. It is a numeral, probably a corrup tion of 1 the initial of Dasan=ten; a nu meral before it is in the place of tens- thus 3, is thirty.--Derivatives from Sa. roots generally have இ prefixed, or ய, changed to எ; as a middle letter for the Sa. ஜ.யகரஉடம்படுமெய், s. [in gram.] The consonant ய் as a connecting letter.
