நாலு

--நால், adj. Four, நான்கு. 2. (fig.) Many, general, multifold, uni versal, all, பல, as நாலுவித்தையும்.--Note. In combination before, க, ச, த, ப, the ல், be comes ற் and before ஞ, ந, ம, it is changed to ன்; sometimes to லா as நாலாகாரியமும், divers matters, various affairs, concerns, circumstances. நாலுகல்வியும். Different branches of know ledge. நாலுகாரியமுமறிந்தவன். A man of general knowledge, one acquainted with men and things. நாலுகையிலும். On all hands, on all sides. நாலுசாதியும். All the castes. 2. Various castes, several castes. நாலுதிக்கும். The four cardinal points. quarters, regions. 2. On all sides, in all directions. நாலுதிக்கிலுஞ்சிதறுண்டுபோக. To be scatter ed in different directions. நாலுதெருவுந்திரிகிறான். He strolls, or wan ders through all the streets. நாலுமுக்கிலுமெதிர்தார்கள். They faced him on all sides. நாலையும்பார்த்துச்செய்யவேண்டும். One should act with due consideration of the whole matter. ஆலும்வேலும்பல்லுக்குறுதிநாலுமிரண்டுஞ்சொல்லுக் குறுதி. As the splint of the banyan and வேல் trees gives strength to the teeth (by rubbing them), so நாலடியார், and குறள், give strength to the speech.

நாலடி--நாலடியார், s. The title of a poetical book on morals having four lines to each verse, and four hundred verses; or the book which ascended, according to the legend, four feet against the stream of the river Veiga, at Madura.

நாலாஞ்சடங்கு--நாலாநாட்சடங்கு, s. Bathing of the new married pair on the fourth day with the ends of their cloths tied together.

நாலாமுறைக்காய்ச்சல், s. Quartan fever.

நாலாம்வருணம், s. The Sudras; (lit.) the fourth caste, சூத்திரசாதி.

நாலாயிரப்பிரபந்தம், s. Four thousand poems made by twelve ஆழ்வார்கள்.

நாலாவிதம், s. [probably a change of நானாவிதம்.] Various kinds, varieties, sundry modes, &c.

நாலுபேருமறிய--நாலுபேர்அறிய, inf. (adverbially) Publicly, before all, gene raly or universally known.

நால்வகைத்தோற்றம், s. The births of four kinds. See தோற்றம்.

நால்வர், s. The four persons, நான்கு பேர். 2. Four devotees of Siva, சம்பந்தர் முதலியநால்வர். நால்வர்வாக்குதேவர்வாக்கு. The testi mony of four persons is equal to that of the god.

நாற்கணம், s. [in gram.] The four classes of letters, viz. vowels, hard consonants, nasals and medials. See under கணம்.

நாற்கதி, s. The four divisions of living beings. See கதி.

நாற்கவி, s. The four kinds of verses. See கவி.

நாற்காலி, appel. n. A quadruped, as நாற்காற்்சீவன். 2. Any four-legged seal, as a chair, a stool, &c.

நாற்காற்சீவன்--நாற்கான்மிருகம், s. A quadruped.

நாற்குணம், s. The four prominent hu man qualities. See under குணம்.

நாற்கோணம், s. A square, a quadran gular figure, a tetragon.

நாற்சதுரம், s. [com. நாற்சதுரம்.] A four angled figure, four square, four sided figure. (a colloquial pleonasm.)

நாற்சந்தி, s. The junction of four ways or streets.

நாற்பண், s. The four kinds of melody.

நாற்பது, s. [poet. நாற்பான்.] Forty, ஓரெண்.

நாற்பதுநாளொருசந்தி, s. [R. Cath. usage.] Quadragesimal, the time of Lent.

நாற்பத்தெண்ணாயிரம்ரிஷிகள், s. The 48, Rishis.

நாற்பயன்--நாற்பொருள், s. The four fruits of science, or kinds of good, treat ed of in moral writings, to which every branch of literature may be reduced, நால்வகைப்பயன், viz: அறம், virtue; 2. பொருள், wealth; 3. இன்பம், pleasure, commonly connubial; 4. வீடு, final bliss, liberation from births, absorption.

நாற்பாட்டன், s. The great grand father's father.

நாற்றிசை, s. [also நாற்பெருந்திசை.] The four cardinal points, நான்குதிக்கு.

நானான்கு, s. Four times four.

நானிலம், s. The four kinds of soil- mountainous, forest, agricultural and maritime, நால்வகைநிலம். 2. The earth, the four quarters of the globe, பூமி.

நானூறு, s. Four hundred.

நான்கு, adj. Four. 2. Four-fold.

நான்மணிமாலை, s. A poem of forty verses of four varieties, (lit.) four gemmed chain, ஓர்பிரபந்தம்.

நான்மருப்பியானை, s. The four tusked elephant of Indra, ஐராவதம்.

நான்மருப்பியானையூர்தி, s. Indra, இந் திரன்.

நான்மறை--நாலுவேதம், s. The four Vedas, சதுர்வேதம். See வேதம்.

நானமறையோன், s. Brahma, பிரமன்.

நான்முகப்புல், s. A grass, Saccharum spontaneum, சசபரம்.

நான்முகன், s. Brahma the four-faced. பிரமன். 2. Argha, அருகன்.

நான்முகன்கிழத்தி, s. Sarasvati, as wife of Brahma, சரஸ்வதி.

நாலு

--நால், கிறேன், நான்றேன், வேன், நால, v. n. [also ஞாலு.] To hang, to be sus pended, to be hung up, தொங்க. 2. To hung down, to fall, as the under-jaw, or tongue; to incline to drop, as the heat, இறங்க. 3. To fall down as drops, துளிவிழ. (சது.)

நால்வாய், s. An elephant whose mouth, or lower lip, hangs down, யானை. (சது.)

நால்வாயன், s. The god Ganesa, the elephant faced, விநாயகன். 2. Indra, the elephant rider, இந்திரன்.

நான்றவாய், s. A hanging mouth or jaw.

நான்றுகொள்ள--நான்றுகொண்டுநிற்க, inf. [vul. நாணுக்கொள்ள.] To hang one's self.
