நவபுண்ணியம், s. The nine charitable actions performed to a sacred guest: 1. எதிர்கொளல், meeting him on his ap proach; 2. பணிதல், doing him homage; 3. ஆசனத்திருத்துதல், seating him; 4. தாள் கழுவுதல், washing his feet; 5. அருச்சித்தல், presenting flowers; 6. தூபங்கொடுத்தல், offering incense; 7. தீபங்காட்டல், waving lamps; 8. புகழ்தல், praising him; 9. அமுதமேந்தல், serving food, as an act of homage and provision.

நவபேதம், s. The nine forms of trans mutations of Siva according to the சித்தா ந்தம் system: 1. சிவம். 2. சத்தி. 3. நாதம். 4. விந்து. 5. சதாசிவம். 6. மகேசுரன். 7. உருத்திரன். 8. விஷ்ணு. 9. பிரமா.

நவப்பிரேதம், s. Nine demons, whose protection is invoked by incantations towards the eight cardinal points, and one over head.

நவராத்திரி, s. Nine nights of strict fasting, cheifly to Durga, who is said to have fought with Durgan an Asura nine days, and to have slain him on the night of the last. The fast begins on the first phasis of the new moon in September.

நவராத்திரிபூசை, s. The puja offered to Durga, Sarasvati and Lakshmi, three days cach, in the nine days' fast.
