ஏது

s. Cause, origin, motive, rea son, object, final cause, காரணம். 2. Pri mitive cause, or the material of which a thing is made, மூலம். 3. (Sometimes written ஏதுவு.) Instrument, means; pecuniary ability, திராணி. 4. Complete preparation, எத்தனம். 5. Inducement, நிமித்தம். 6. [in rhetoric.] A figure of speech showing the cause, motive, &c., ஓரலங்காரம். 7. [in logic.] The reason alleged in proof of a proposition, one of the three parts of an argument, the other two being பட்சம் and திட்டாந்தம்--as in attributing the existence of smoke to the presence of fire. ஏதுக்காட்ட, inf. To show rea sons, causes, &c., காரணங்காட்ட.

ஏதுப்பண்ண, inf. To use means (to attain an object), வகைசெய்ய.

ஏதுப்பார்க்க, inf. To seek occasion, opportunity, &c., வகைபார்க்க.

ஏதுவாக, inf. To be adapted to; subject or liable to.

ஏதுவாக்க, inf. To adapt, suit; to subject, make liable to.

ஏதுவானவன், s. A man of pro perty, means, pecuniary ability.

ஏதுவிலக்கு, s. A figure in rhetoric --as காரணவிலக்கு.

ஏதுவின்முடித்தல், v. noun. Giving the reasons or causes of things asserted by an author as a clue to the subject without extended description. See உத்தி.

ஏதுவுருவகம், s. A figure in rhe toric, a kind of metaphor in which the point of resemblance is indicated, உருவகத் திலொன்று--as இவள்மாற்றத்தாற்கிள்ளை, in talk she is a parrot.

ஏதுப்போலி--ஏதுவாபாசம், s. Fallacy of the reason of an argument.

ஏதுவனுமானம், s. See அனுமா னம்.

ஏதிலார், s. [plu.] The poor, the destitute, வறியோர். (p.)

inter. pron. [neut. sing. from ஏ.] Which, what, why, wherefore, how, whence. 2. Whatever, whichever, any. உனக்கேதுவேணும். Which do you like? மகளேது, தாயேது, பெண்டிரேது. What is a daughter, what is a mother, what is a wife? (p.) அவனுன்னையப்படிப்பேசவேண்டியதுதேது. Why should he blame you so? அவனுக்கிங்கேதுபணம். Where is there money for him here? இவ்வனத்திலேகுடியேது. How can there be inhabitants in a desert like this? ஏதுவிதமும். By some means or other. ஏதுகாரியம்வந்தாலும். Whatever may happen.

ஏதும். Any thing, whatever. கற்பகவிருட்சம் ஏதுந்தரும். The Kalpa tree [in Swerga] yields whatever is desired. சாப்பாட்டுக்கேதுமுண்டா. Have you any thing to eat? ஏதுந்தாரும். Give me something, help me ever so little. ஏதுங்கெட்டவன். A person of no worth, a good-for-nothing wretch.

ஏதாவது--ஏதாகிலும்--ஏதாகுதல் --ஏதானாலும்--ஏதேனும்--ஏதென்றாலும். Some thing, whatever, ever so little.
